Dance Goals and Progress Tracking: Your Guide to Growth and Achievement
As the end of the year approaches, it’s the perfect time to reflect on progress and set new dance goals. While many people make New Year’s resolutions, I’ve always preferred setting goals instead. Goals focus on growth, improvements, and specific areas to work on - and they’re something I highly recommend to all of my students.
At Dance Dynamic, we regularly encourage our dancers to set goals, especially in our Dancers Development classes, where we review and establish new targets every term. Setting goals is a powerful way to stay motivated, track progress, and celebrate achievements. Let’s explore how to set, track, and achieve your dance goals effectively...
Why Set Dance Goals?
Dance is a journey of continual growth, and setting goals helps to:
Improve skills: Whether it’s perfecting your pirouettes or mastering a challenging tap sequence, goals provide focus.
Stay motivated: Having something to work towards keeps dancers excited and engaged in their classes.
Build confidence: Achieving goals, no matter how small, boosts self-esteem and shows how far you’ve come.
Achieve more in performances: Clear goals can help dancers shine brighter on stage, whether it’s improved timing, performance, or technique.
How to Set Achievable Dance Goals
The key to success is setting goals that are realistic and specific. Here’s how:
Make Them SMART:
Specific: Define exactly what you want to achieve. For example, "Improve flexibility in splits" is clearer than "Get more flexible."
Measurable: Choose goals you can track, like increasing the number of turns in a pirouette.
Achievable: Ensure your goal is challenging but not impossible.
Relevant: Focus on goals that align with your dance style or long-term aspirations.
Time-bound: Set a deadline to stay focused, like "by the next recital" or "within three months."
Break Them Down: Big goals can feel overwhelming. Break them into smaller steps to make progress manageable. For example:
Goal: Improve balance.
Steps: Practice balancing on one leg for 30 seconds daily, then progress to turning balances.
Write Them Down: Putting your goals on paper makes them feel real. Keep them somewhere visible, like a goal tracking notebook, a journal, or your phone, to remind yourself regularly. Better yet, share them with your dance teacher! Your teacher will help you keep motivated and on-track!
How to Track Progress
Tracking your progress is just as important as setting the goal. Here are some tips:
Regular Check-Ins: Reflect weekly or monthly on what’s going well and what needs more focus.
Use a Journal: Document your practice sessions, what you’ve achieved, and any challenges you’ve faced.
Ask for Feedback: Your dance teacher can provide valuable insights into how you’re improving and what to work on next.
Record Videos: Watching yourself dance can reveal areas of improvement and show how far you’ve come.
Reviewing and Evaluating
At the end of the term or year, take time to evaluate your progress:
Celebrate Wins: Recognise what you’ve achieved, no matter how small.
Reflect on Challenges: Think about what was difficult and how you can overcome those obstacles.
Set New Goals: Use your reflections to create fresh targets for the next term.
